The Complete Guide to Picking the Perfect Boxing Shoes
Most people don't understand the importance of boxing shoes. But they can literally mean the difference between winning and losing the match! But don't worry, because this guide will teach you how to find the perfect pair!
When thinking about boxing, you may not think that the gear matters too much, but then again, you'd be wrong! One of the most important pieces of gear in any boxer's arsenal has got to be the boxing shoes. It doesn't matter if you're just starting out or you're a seasoned fighter, those lightweight shoes can literally mean the difference between winning and losing that big match!
The perfect pair will be incredibly light, highly ventilated to keep your feet from sweating, and of course offer enough ankle support so you don't break anything while moving like Ali! Of course if the shoe doesn't grip very well, you could slip and drop your guard which is never a good move, well that is unless you like being knocked out! If the boxing shoes fail in any of those area's you can pretty much be assured that you're going to lose and possibly even break something!
This can make buying the perfect pair of boxing shoes an incredibly difficult task, well that is of course if you don't finish this article! That's because I'm going to show you the ropes of buying the perfect shoes!
Step 1: Choosing the style
The first step is to figure out what type of boxing shoes you need. You see, the shoes come in 2 main styles. First you have your high tops, these provide the most ankle support. High tops are predominately used for kick boxers and other martial artists where good ankle support is key. Low tops are usually used for regular boxing as well as training and working out. Low tops provide a good amount of ankle support while allowing you to maintain agility and movement. So depending on what type of boxing you're going to be partaking in, this should narrow down the list of potential boxing shoes a lot.
Step 2: Fit it to Win it
Next you need to find some shoes that fit correctly. The only way you can do this is by going to the store yourself and trying them on. After all, you can't tell if they're going to fit you unless you try on a couple different pair. You can even narrow down the selection farther by looking at shoes you like and can actually afford! Once you've found a couple pairs that you like, walk around the store and do a couple foot moves to test them out. If they feel good and fit correctly then put them over to the side, put the ones you don't like back.
Step 3: Lightening the load
You should have a couple pair that both fit and look aesthetically pleasing. The next step is to find the lightest pair of shoes. Good quality boxing shoes will be made out of a tough but light weight material. Most of them are made with a combination of suede and leather. If they feel heavy, then forget about them. Only pick the ones that feel like you're not wearing anything. Just be sure the ones you pick can breathe because nothing can turn the tides of a match like 2 gallons of sweat leaking out of your shoes! While boxing, you're feet are going to sweat, a lot which can make you slip and lose a match!
Step 4: Staying upright
And while we're on the subject of staying upright on your two feet, you're going to need to make sure that the shoes you select have a good rubber grip to them. They should have an obvious looking no-slip pattern on the bottom. And if you need any more assurance slip them on again and try to make them slip. If you can do any move without them slipping then you've found your shoe!
The Secret to Finding the Perfect Pair
As a side note, I all ways try to find a pair of shoes that feels like an extension of my body. If you can put them on and forget you're wearing anything, then congratulations you've just found your perfect pair of boxing shoes!
